Skip Wilson, Lourdes Olle Speak To Brandon Lions
Skip Wilson of Brandon, spoke to the Lions Club on FAMILY PROMISE program that is beginning to start more rapidly in Hillsborough Co. It is a nationwide program in which HOMELESS FAMILIES use churches as their base of learning to “fend for themselves.” Skip Wilson said that there are 3500 homeless children in Hillsborough Co.
His talk was to make Lions aware of the need for churches to be asked to provide homeless families a place to stay for a week at a time. Then the family would move on to another church that would provide the same type of service. He said that they want to help 3-5 families at a time. There will be a follow up on each family in 6 months. He said that homeless people will not say to others they are homeless.
He said most of the adults do not have work & they would not be considered for employment unless they had a permanent address which a church address would be acceptable.
The program purpose is Support Society Helping People to Support Themselves. Through their efforts it will strengthen lives while building communities.
Skip Wilson said that the main location in Hillsborough is at 201 E. Morgan Street in Tampa.
Lourdes Olle, Lions Club member and Faculty Advisor to Brandon High School newly chartered Leo Club, talked briefly of its efforts with 12 members. Induction of this Leo Club is set tentatively for April.
